You’ve got to be thinking we’re crazy, right? We felt the same way too. When Daily Greens offered to hook us up with a 4-day juice cleanse kit if we were willing to share our experience, we thought it sounded crazy. But, we’re both believers in the idea that you’re capable of anything you put your mind to…and especially if it’s just for a short 96 hours.
So, a few quick things about Daily Greens before we jump into how it went. The company was founded by Shauna Martin, who was daily-greens-logodiagnosed with breast cancer as a young mom. With a family to care for, Shauna struggled to recover from her multiple surgeries and the harsh side effects of chemotherapy. Now, cancer free, Shauna attributes her recovery in part, to her healthy lifestyle. She decided that she wanted to share this life-enriching habit and spread the good word.
As we enter October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it felt like the perfect time to take Daily Greens up on their offer.
Here’s what our daily routine consisted of: 
In the morning:

  • Drink a glass of lemon water first thing in the morning
  • Replace coffee with Yogi Green Tea – Super Antioxidant (our favorite, but you can drink any green tea!)
  • Renew: 12oz cold pressed juice with mint, spinach, cucumber, watermelon, dandelion greens, pineapple, celery, lime and himalayan pink salt

Throughout the afternoon: 

  • Elevate: 12oz cold pressed juice with cucumber, pear, spinach, lime, watercress and Madagascar vanilla
  • Purity: 16oz cold pressed juice with cucumber, celery, kale, broccoli, lemon, parsley and basil
  • Limited snacking was an option, but only on raw fruits and vegetables when needed. We often shared an orange or apple to get through the cravings!

In the evening

  • A large dinner made of raw vegetables only. No grains, dairy, meats, alcohol, refined and packaged foods

Pre-Cleanse thoughts (aka freak outs) from Leah & Maggie: 
LeahSo today we start our 4-day Daily Greens Juice Cleanse and let me just start by saying I literally dreamt about cheating on the cleanse… Seriously, I haven’t even officially started yet and I woke up worried that I had already cheated.  WTF. I guess I need this cleanse even more than I thought, which is a lot after a extremely #treatyoself summer.
Here are my conscious thoughts… drinking three juices through out the day with lemon water and fruit (if needed) doesn’t img_4684really intimidate me too much, I can starve myself and get through the day. But, for dinner you eat a RAW, vegetable based dinner. That means no meat, dairy products, coffee, alcohol, processed foods, and yes no pizza. My fear is that once I eat this rabbit food appetizer of a dinner that my hangry will kick in and I’ll literally be unable satisfy my hunger with carrot sticks or HALF an apple, or 10 grapes… Once this happens I may blackout and can no longer be accountable for what I stuff in my face.
Let’s just hope I don’t dream of big macs dancing in my head or steal an ice cream cone for a small child.
Maggie: Okay, I’m a pizza and Jimmy Johns type of girl. I drink coffee every morning, rarely eat a meal that doesn’t include some type of meat or protein and I love my Kim. So committing to a juice cleanse that only consisted of juice and raw fruits and vegetables was a lofty goal. In theory, it sounded great…spend 4 days being super healthy, do my yoga and count down the hours til it’s over. Easy, right? I’m not so sure. BUT, I’m #sheddingforthewedding and so hell, I’ll do whatever one tells me if it’ll kick my butt into gear.
In all honesty, this will 100% be a challenge for me, but mostly when it comes to dinner time. Green juice is a regular part of my morning routine, and often times my schedule is so all over the place, finding time for lunch isn’t always possible. So, here we go and in the words of my fiance when I told him I was cleansing…”God help us all.”

DAY 1:
Leah: One day down, three to go, WE can do this, I think. Per the cleanse instructions, I woke up and drank a big ass glass of water, which I put next to my bed so I didn’t even have to get fully up to complete step one, win. Follow that with a warm glass of green tea and I was ready to go. I’m not a big coffee drinker and often drink tea in the am so basically I’m crushing this cleanse already. After my morning juice I was feeling good and had peed about 1000x. Our lunch juice is a bit greener and not as easy to get down as the am. At this point I’m feeling healthy AF and ready to crush 4:30 yoga. Not gonna lie we were both a bit nervous our hot yoga class would have us dying of malnutrition in savasana on the floor, but to our surprise, class felt amazing!
Post class had us feeling high and surprisingly not hungry. Next step was to hit up the grocery store and stock up on fruits and veggies for the remainder of the cleanse. I filled my basket with fresh produce and more fresh produce because I had no real reason to wonder down any of the other aisles, knowing if I found the chips, I would surely crack. I checked out feeling underwhelmed at my rabbit basket but ready to crush some raw dinner.
A big ass salad, topped with home-made guac hit the spot and I didn’t even feel like I was cleansing. I retired to my room early, knowing I did not want to see what my roomies were making/ordering for dinner.
Day 1 takeaway: Cleansing with a buddy is definitely better than cleansing alone!
Maggie: Woo, despite a few moments of thinking I wasn’t going to make it, we SURVIVED day 1! I started off my day, as instructed, and initially thought I’d be on the struggle bus without coffee but green tea did the trick. It was easy sailing until the afternoon hit and our coworkers started making their lunches and snacking on chips, which meant I had to keep my eyes glued to the computer and resist all urges to order Jimmy Johns. Leah and I ended up sharing an orange (yes, just HALF an orange) in between juices 2 and 3, which surprisingly helped A LOT. Cravings…gone! Around 3:45pm, we started chugging our 16oz Purity (which is by far my favorite of the 3 juices). 4:10pm…time for yoga! On the way to the studio, I was genuinely concerned one or both of us would pass out in the middle of our hot yoga class with only juice and half an orange in our bodies.
After an hour of class, we both looked at each other and unanimously agreed – we felt great! Out of shape…yes. Super hungry…not so much.
This is when my real worrying kicked in. Dinner was approaching and I panicked about going to bed hungry. After eating a LARGE bowl of cherry tomato, cucumber and avocado salad, I felt good. My dessert craving did kick in a few hours later, and that’s when I decided to call it a day and get some sleep.
All in all, a pretty big success and not as bad as I anticipated. Day 1 takeaway: juice cleanses make you have to pee… A LOT.

DAY 2:
Leah: On to day two.. Initially upon opening my eyes, I was ready to demolish an everything bagel, toasted with cream cheese, but I chugged my glass of lemon water and immediately felt better. This is a habit I will definitely keep! Filling your belly with water first thing in the water and kick starting your digestive system with lemon really does help with the cravings.
Sadly, work ran late and 4:30 yoga was not a possibility today. I teach yoga on Wednesday nights at 6pm and I was definitely a little nervous my mental clarity would not be at an all time high and I’d end up stumbling over my words and confusion left to right, hand or foot… what is yoga! But all in all class was great and I was ready for dinner! At this point it was nearly 8pm and I’d only had an apple and juice all day. I had big dreams to make a recipe from the Daily Greens book but ended up having the same dinner from the night before.
The salad had kick started my hungry and I was struggling to gain control of the hangry. I ended up snacking on a few grapes and was forced to lock myself in my room for the rest of them night. Half. way. there..img_5745
Maggie: Woke up day 2 feeling light as a feather…and STARVING. It took about 2 hours to shake my breakfast sandwich craving but after Renew, it subsided and I went from starving, to content. Fast forward to an afternoon full downing cups of green tea and two more juices. I managed to not snack during most of the day, but I was heading to the grocery store after work and decided that it would be BAD NEWS if I didn’t get something in my stomach so an apple it was.
Surprisingly, I was pumped for my dinner. In the book Daily Greens provided, there are a TON of awesome recipes that require only raw vegetable, including raw zucchini spaghetti. Essentially – raw zucchini noodles and raw, homemade marinara sauce. My fiance and I are always down for spaghetti, so I figured I’d give it a shot. The recipe was SUPER simple and just required a few ingredients – 6 tomatoes, 2 cloves of garlic, 1/4 white onion, 6 basil leaves, 2 sprigs of oregano and olive oil. Throw them all in the blender, and boom…dinner is served.  After eating I felt full, and fulfilled for the most part until…
Around 9pm, I had a moment. A moment full of searching for the closest pizza place that could feed me the fastest. My fiance caught wind of what I was doing and although I think he was also staving, he offered a few words of encouragement and offered to cut an apple up for me, while he snacked on a Snickers bar….! Crisis averted. Onto day 3….

DAY 3:
img_4696Leah: The book says your craving should lessen by the day and come day 3 you should be feeling great! I initially thought this was bull shit but I have to say I was not hungry for food and was looking forward to my juices.
All was good in the world, until… Thirsty Thursday’s. I ran a few errands and got back to my place around 6pm to find my roommates making my favorite fall beverage, Slutty Pumpkins. SOS. It took all of my will power not to cave, have a drink and also not to immediately leave and look like an antisocial hangry bitch.
Maggie: You know you’re struggling when you ask your coworker if you can just smell their lunch to help with your cravings. Sorry about that, Rich. I learned on Day 3 that my body has about a 2 day tolerance for ignoring my cravings, then they intensify….quickly. With that said, my morning liquid diet did satisfy my hunger, which I somewhat attribute to the fact that my normal diet is very similar in the morning/early afternoon so it wasn’t too much of a shock for my body.
That night, I may or may not have snuck a few of my favorite “Way Better” chips. In my defense…they’re vegan, sprouted, gluten free and non-GMO chips with all kinds of healthiness so, they’re basically vegetables…right? Their website says “all the goodness, none of the guilt.” Okay…maybe a little bit of guilt.

DAY 4:
LeahDay 4 came and I was determined to finish this thing off strong! Luckily, it was such a hectic day that I hardly even had a fullsizerendermoment to breathe never mind think about food. As promised I had plenty of energy and almost no cravings post juices. I decided it was in my best interest to crash at my parents house after the long day. Had I decided to go back to Boston I would most definitely have caved and met my friends out at the bar.
Proud to say I finished the 4-day cleanse without cheating and feel like a slightly better/thinner person for it!
Post cleanse thoughts: I highly suggest the 4-day Daily Greens cleanse to anyone who is looking to press restart on their gut and potentially use the new found mental clarity and determination to kick start a healthier life style. I plan to continue my morning routine and even try to keep juice and raw food days as a more regular thing.
10/10 will juice cleanse again!
Maggie: Hello hello, day 4! Waking up and seeing the light at the end of the tunnel may have been the best feeling ever. I started off with my lemon water and juice, and even ordered another juice in the afternoon, just because I was feelin’ it. My cravings weren’t so bad, probably because I knew I was off the hook in just a few hours but regardless…finishing the 4 day cleanse was something I really didn’t think I’d be able to do and despite a few moments of weakness, I felt amazing afterwards and definitely intend to keep up my morning routine full of all the liquids.
Would I do this again? YES. Leah and I are thinking at the start of every new season. 4 days, 4 times a year? Sure!

I’m sure you’re all wondering what happened the day after. We were both curious too. Would our bodies be THRILLED for regular food? Or would it be a shock after 4 days of super clean, yet limited eating?
So, here’s the truth. We binged. And we binged hard.  Like so hard, I think Grubhub came to my house TWICE on Saturday. Not super proud of that, but felt like you needed to know in the effort to maintain full disclosure. We felt like shit, as you probably guessed, and the next day….back to juicing!
